Denver Fencing Center Classes
The Denver Fencing Center offers more than 30 classes a week in Denver in all three weapons for little fencers (ages 6-8), youth (ages 8 to 14), and adult/teen (ages 15+) fencers. Our classes provide a great place to learn to fencing. Through these classes, we can take a student of any age who knows nothing about fencing, find them their weapon, and turn them into a good competitive fencer.
Class Cost:
One weekday class:
$65 for a six week session, plus $30 session equipment rental fee(if necessary).
One Saturday class session cost $65 for a four week session, plus $30 session equipment rental fee(if necessary). The Saturday classes are longer (1.5 hours) than our weekday classes.
Two weekly classes:
$105 for a six week session, plus the $30 session equipment rental fee(if necessary).
Open Fencing:
If you would like to visit our open fencing session, the cost is $15 per session (equipment rental is $5 or free if you are currently taking a class).
Membership:
Many of the fencers opt for our silver membership which cost $110 a month. This membership allow them to attend all classes and any open fencing sessions. Please read the Membership section for more details.
Class Schedule
If you would like to see the classes listed out by days of the week, check out the Schedule page.
Class Notes:
Our Weekday classes run throughout the year, except in August and December. During those months, we offer private lessons and open fencing.
Our Weekend Classes take a hiatus during the Summer and December. We offer camps during these vacation times.
Maciek's Competive Epee classe cost $110 a month (silver membership) to join. For this class, you are expected to train for competitive competition. |

Head Coach Nathan Anderson teaches a kids beginner class
Beginner Classes:
Beginner Fencing class teaches a student the fundamentals of how to fence. The student learns the rules, techniques, and terminology of the sport of fencing. The class covers footwork, blade drills, and fencing with electric scoring equipment.
The weekday fencing classes covers all three weapons of fencing: foil, epee, and sabre in six week course.
Our weekend Ongoing Youth Beginner Foil teaches the basic to beginners while giving the slightly experienced students different skills to work on in a four week course. Many of the fencers travel long distances to attend these Saturday classes and that is why we follow this ongoing enrollment model.

Foil Classes:

David Johanson scores with a fleche on John Luke Bucuvalas
Foil is a light, fast court sword type weapon where the opponents score by touching with the tip of the weapon on the torso. Foil fencers are like artists. They can follow the rules and paint photo-realistically or break the rules like Picasso.

Epee Classes

Alex Axford bend his blade around Reid Doyle's bell to score a touche in epee.
Epee is derived from the duel weapon and touches are scored via the tip of the weapon anyway on the body. Epee fencers work like scientists: making good experments and learning from their success and failures.

Saber Classes

Reid Doyle scores a touche in the 2009 U.S. Fencing Summer Nationals. He goes onto win the bout 5-4.
Sabre is a fencing weapon derived from calvalry dueling. While we no longer fence on horses, we make touches above the waist of the body with the tip or side of the blade. Sabre fencing is much like business: high risk, high yield, go as fast as you can, and stay under control at the right times.

Different times during the year, Jillian Lietzau offers a theatrical fencing (i.e. Fencing for actors).
Homeschool Classes
The Denver Fencing Center currently works with different groups of home school children to offer fencing as their P.E. class. Other home school children take class at the Center during normal after-school times. Our coach, Evan Rutherford runs the fencing class at Credo Academy
If you like to set up a private class or would like us to teach fencing to your home school class or group, please contact us at: classesATdenverfencingcenter.com

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What do I wear to a fencing class?
Wear a comfortable cotton t-shirt or sweatshirt, a long pants (thick sweat pants are ideal) and athletic shoes. The Denver Fencing Center does have a changing room and bathrooms to make clothing changes.
2. How old does my child need to be to start fencing?
We generally recommend that your child start around age 8 for our Youth Classes. Usually at this age, they are able to get into winter clothing (similar to the fencing gear) by themselvers, coordinate their hands and their feet together, and have the concentration to attend a one hour to an hour and a half class. U.S Fencing competitions youngest age group is ages 10 and under. If you would like your child to start earlier, we created Little Fencers for kids ages 6 to 8 to try out the sport in a supportive environment.
3. If the online registration doesn't work?
Just give us a call at (303)922-7288 or drop by the club. We will email the forms or give you the forms to fill out, take your payment, and you will be all set for your fencing class.
4. What is your refund policy?
Denver Fencing Center will give a refund prior to the start of the class, if you are unable to attend. Once a class session has started, you will receive credits for later session. No refund will be given after the class session starts.
If we have to cancel a class, we will provide a refund for the classes cancelled.
5. What is your class make-up policy?
If you miss a class, we allow you to make it up by taking a similar class during the same class session. We offer over 30 different classes. So if you miss a class in week two of the session, you can take two classes in week three. We make it very easy to catch back up with your fencing.
6. What is the equipment rental fee and what does it cover?
The equipment rental fee covers all of the fencing gear that you use during your class: mask, underarm, jacket, glove, chest protector (women), lame, body cord and a foil, epee, or saber. We charge $30 for four to six week set of classes if you do not have this equipment. If you have the non-electric fencing equipment: mask, jacket, glove, underarm, chest protector (women), then we will drop the fee to $15. Nearly all beginners will need to rent equipment, while experienced fencers usually have some sub-set of equipment.
6. What does it cost to get all of the equipment used in the class?
The equipment, depending on the weapon, will run from $250 to $500. We rent the equipment so people can try out the sport for a significant amount of time before outlaying the investment. We find that many parents appreciate the option of renting till their child is 100% vested in the sport.
7. Do you sell equipment? Is is cheaper through you or online?
Yes, we have a store that stocks most major fencing items. We can order and have the item with a week or two based upon shipping and vendor availability.
The cost of the equipment is about the same. We get a little of a volume discount, but we have to charge you local Sales Tax. So online ordering vs. DFC retail ends up being roughly the same price.
